Death of a Naturalist

Seamus Heaney · 1966 CE · Poem · English · Contemporary

A boy fills jampotfuls of frogspawn from a flax-dam and comes back one day to find the water gross-bellied and croaking with the grown frogs. Elsewhere a father digs potato drills and a grandfather cuts turf while the son who has no spade squats between the pen and the paper, and a four-foot box brings a younger brother home. Heaney's first collection, which set a County Derry farm as ground his poetry would keep returning to for fifty years.
