Wintering Out
An Iron Age man lifted out of a Jutland bog, hanged and thrown down as an offering to the goddess of the ground, is addressed by a poet who promises to travel to Aarhus and stand before the peat-brown head. Around him lie the townlands of south Derry, Anahorish and Broagh and Toome, sounded for the Irish and English packed into each syllable. Published as the Troubles hardened, it finds in the bog's victims a way of looking at killing at home.
