The Haw Lantern

Seamus Heaney · 1987 CE · Poem · English · Contemporary

A hawthorn berry burning on a bare winter bush becomes Diogenes' lantern, held up to scan the poet with everyone else for a just man. Half the book files dispatches from invented countries, a Republic of Conscience with no interpreters, a frontier post where a car is stopped and its driver read; at the centre stand eight sonnets for his mother. Written the year after her death, and the most austere of his collections.
