To the Lighthouse
In a rented house on Skye, Mrs Ramsay promises her youngest son a sail out to the lighthouse tomorrow and her husband contradicts her about the weather, while eight children and a houseful of guests turn on her attention. Lily Briscoe sets up an easel on the lawn and cannot get one corner of her picture right; between the two halves of the book an empty house stands through ten years of wind and salt, with the news arriving in brackets. Woolf called it an elegy rather than a novel, and said that writing it laid her parents to rest.
