A Fool's Life

Ryūnosuke Akutagawa · 1927 CE · Short Story · Japanese · Modernist

Fifty-one numbered fragments, some of them a single paragraph, open with a young man halfway up a ladder in the mezzanine of the Maruzen bookshop, looking down on the clerks below and deciding that life is not worth one line of Baudelaire. What follows takes in a mother confined to an asylum, an arranged marriage, a teaching post, sparks thrown off a tram wire, and a hardening conviction that her illness is coming for him. Handed to a friend with instructions about when it might be printed.
