The Nose (Akutagawa)

Ryūnosuke Akutagawa · 1916 CE · Short Story · Japanese · Modernist

A learned priest of Ike-no-o is known through the whole capital for a nose five or six inches long that hangs down past his chin, so that an acolyte has to hold it up on a wooden board whenever he sits down to eat. He maintains that the thing does not trouble him in the least, combs the scriptures for a comparable case, and studies every face he meets for signs of laughter, until a disciple returns from the city with a physician's method involving boiling water and a good deal of treading.
