Hell Screen
The finest painter in the capital is a stooped, sour old man whom nobody can stand and nobody can replace, and his lord sets him to paint the Buddhist hells across a folding screen. He cannot invent what he has not seen, so apprentices are chained and set upon by birds of prey while he sketches their faces; for the central panel he asks his patron for a sight he cannot stage himself. Narrated by a retainer who insists on his master's goodness; the base tale is in the Uji Shūi Monogatari.
