Rashomon
A servant let go by a master who can no longer feed him waits out the evening rain under the ruined south gate of a Kyoto so worn by earthquake, fire and famine that unclaimed bodies are carried up to its second storey. Deciding between starving and turning thief, he climbs the ladder to sleep out of the weather and finds a firelit old woman crouched over a corpse, pulling the hair out of it by the handful. Akutagawa's first published work, from tales in the twelfth-century Konjaku Monogatari.
