The Separate Notebooks
Pages of prose alternate with verse under headings that behave like a working diary kept beside the finished poems: a mirrored gallery of the dead, a wormwood star hanging over the century, notes on having been made by two of them at once. The manner is deliberately unsettled, aphorism giving way to lyric and back, so that a doubt can be entered without being resolved. The volume that carried Miłosz's late voice into English, translated with Robert Hass and Robert Pinsky in the years after the Nobel.
