The Issa Valley

Czesław Miłosz · 1955 CE · Novel · Polish · Contemporary

Thomas grows up at his grandparents' manor in a Lithuanian river valley reputed to be unusually thick with devils, learning the birds, the guns and the long grudges of the parish. Around him the estate world contracts under land reform and new borders, a priest quarrels with the older rites the peasants keep, and a gamekeeper cannot shake what he did in the years of the war. Written in French exile after Miłosz broke with Warsaw, and the only book in which he set his childhood country down as narrative.
