Bambi, a Life in the Woods

Felix Salten · 1923 CE · Novel · German · Modernist

A roe deer is born in a thicket and learns the meadow by degrees: which birds can be trusted, why the herd goes still without warning, what the old stag knows and declines to explain. Winter empties the forest of food, and the thing the animals call Him arrives with a noise that empties it of animals. Salten wrote for Viennese adults rather than children; Germany banned and burned the work in 1936 as a parable of European Jewry.
