A Treatise on Poetry
Four cantos carry Polish poetry from the cafés of Kraków in 1900 through the arguments of Warsaw between the wars to the burning city of the occupation, naming the poets and setting what they wrote against what was coming for them. The last part moves to a Pennsylvania valley in 1948, where nature offers a survivor an exemption from history that the poem turns over at length. Written in Paris in the years after his break with the Warsaw government, and treated by his translators as the centre of the work.
