Orlando
A young nobleman catches the eye of the aged Elizabeth, skates on the frozen Thames with a Russian princess, and takes an embassy to Constantinople, where he wakes from a seven-day sleep as a woman. Three centuries pass over her without visible ageing — Restoration wits, a Turkish encampment, an eighteenth-century drawing room, a motor car — and a poem about an oak tree is carried in her breast pocket the whole way. Written for Vita Sackville-West and illustrated with photographs of her, it takes the form of a biography and is in fact a portrait of a lover.
