Between the Acts
On a June day in 1939 the village comes up to Pointz Hall for its annual pageant, and Miss La Trobe drives her amateurs through scene after scene of English history behind a hedge that keeps swallowing their words. Between the acts the audience wanders, gossips and scatters, while the couple who own the house carry an unspoken quarrel through the afternoon with aircraft audible overhead. Woolf finished the typescript in February 1941 and it was published after her death, without the final revision she had intended.
