Field Work
After years teaching in Belfast the poet has moved his family to a rented cottage in Wicklow, and the sonnets written there set a ploughed field and a vestigial hedge against the killings he has left behind. Elegies name the dead outright: a cousin shot on a country road, a fisherman who broke a curfew to go drinking and was blown up for it. Closing the book is a version of Dante's Ugolino, which puts the Irish dead inside a much older account of vengeance.
