Station Island

Seamus Heaney · 1984 CE · Poem · English · Contemporary

Three days of fasting on an island in Lough Derg, walking the penitential rounds barefoot, and at each turn a figure from the poet's past steps forward to be answered: an old tinker, the novelist William Carleton, a cousin shot at a crossroads who accuses him of saccharining the murder into verse. Among the shades is Joyce, telling him to stop taking notes on the tribe and swim out on his own. Heaney's purgatorio, and the hinge on which he turned away from the bog.
