Tales from Ovid
Twenty-four passages chosen out of Ovid: Phaethon losing the reins of the sun's chariot, Actaeon turned to a stag for a glimpse he did not seek, Tereus and Procne, Myrrha, and the ivory woman warming under Pygmalion's hand. Hughes works from the Latin at speed and in a plain modern line, keeping the violence and sex that earlier English translators smoothed away. It took the Whitbread Book of the Year the season before Birthday Letters did.
