Urvashi Won by Valor

Kalidasa · c. 400 CE · Play · Indian · Classical

A mortal king rescues a heaven-dancer carried off by a demon, and the two are then caught between a queen on earth and a stage in Indra's court where one slip of the tongue during a performance is enough to get an actress cursed. The fourth act turns the king loose in the forest half out of his mind, questioning a peacock, a cuckoo and a bee about where she has gone, in a long lyric sequence partly set to Prakrit song. The Pururavas and Urvashi story comes down from a dialogue hymn of the Rigveda, and Kalidasa is working a thousand years downstream of it.
