The Cycle of the Seasons
Six cantos on the Indian year - summer's dust and drought, the monsoon breaking, autumn's white grass and clear water, the cold, the frosts, the spring - each of them described through what it does to lovers. Heat that drives snakes under a peacock's shadow and first thunder that stops deer where they stand are set next to sandal paste, wet garments and the ornaments a woman puts on for one season and takes off for the next. The earliest work attributed to Kalidasa and the one most often doubted, though nothing else in Sanskrit handles the year quite like it.
