The Birth of the War God

Kalidasa · c. 400 CE · Poem · Indian · Classical

The gods, harried by a demon whom nothing born of them can kill, need a son of Shiva, and Shiva has been sitting in trance on the Himalaya since his first wife burned herself. The mountain's daughter is sent up to attend him, the god of desire is sent to make him look at her, and when that miscarries she goes off to austerities harsher than anything a god has attempted. Kalidasa's most ambitious poem, worked up out of the Puranic matter of Shiva and Parvati; only the first eight cantos are generally accepted as his.
