The Cloud Messenger
A yaksha banished for a year from the treasure god's mountain city, pining on the hill where Rama's footprints are, watches the first monsoon cloud gather against the peak and asks it to carry word north to his wife. Half of it maps the route - Vidisha, the temple gongs of Ujjayini, the Ganges running pale where it meets the dark Yamuna, the snows of Kailasa - and half describes the courtyard, the pet peacock, and the sleepless woman the cloud will find there. The founding example of the sandesha kavya, the messenger form, imitated in Sanskrit and the regional languages for a thousand years.
