Refusing Heaven

Jack Gilbert · 2005 CE · Poem · Modern / American · Contemporary

Late poems of Greece, of travel and of a wife, Michiko, who is dead, return again and again to the claim that ordinary happiness is enough and a better judgment of the world than any heaven. The lines are plain and sparse, with little ornament. A lyric collection, the fourth in forty years from a poet of few and slowly written books.
