The Dynasty of Raghu

Kalidasa · c. 400 CE · Poem · Indian · Classical

Nineteen cantos on the solar kings of Ayodhya, opening with a childless ruler sent to wait on a sage's cow in the forest for a son and running down through some thirty generations of his line. The middle six compress Rama's exile and return, and the later kings get a canto apiece as the succession thins - a conqueror who circles the whole subcontinent, a hunter, a boy on a throne he cannot fill. Kalidasa's longest work, and the poem by which Sanskrit critics measured the mahakavya.
