Heimskringla
Sixteen linked lives of the kings of Norway run from a migrant Odin ruling as a man among men, through the sea-king who forced the country into one kingdom and the two Olafs who converted it, down to the dynastic wars of the twelfth century. Snorri wrote it in Iceland around 1230 and quoted the court poets as evidence, on the stated ground that verse composed in a chieftain's hearing could not flatter him too far from what everyone present had seen. It gave Norway a national history and gave the family sagas their method of reporting a killing without comment.
