The Book of Mormon
A family leaves Jerusalem around 600 BCE on a prophet's warning, crosses the sea in a ship built at divine direction, and founds a people in the Americas who split into rival nations through a thousand years of prophets, kings, migrations and wars. The record presents itself as an abridgment engraved on metal plates by the prophet-historian Mormon around 400 CE, and includes a visit of the risen Christ to the Americas. Published in Palmyra, New York, in 1830, it is the founding text of the Latter Day Saint movement and one of the most consequential books of nineteenth-century America.
