Metamorphoses
Fifteen books of Latin hexameter run from the creation of the world to the Rome of Augustus, held together by one rule: everything turns into something else. Nymphs become trees, hunters become stags, grief hardens into stone, and gods pursue mortals who pay for it in altered flesh. The great compendium of change, and the book through which most of later Europe read its Greek myth.
