The Cantos
The first canto sets Odysseus on the black ship going down to the dead for Tiresias, rendered from a Renaissance Latin Homer; the second turns into Ovid's pirates as the god fills their hold with vines and panthers. Fifty years of instalments follow — a Rimini condottiere and his temple, Chinese dynastic annals, John Adams, and at last a cage in an army camp near Pisa. Pound called it a poem including history.
