Paterson

William Carlos Williams · 1946 CE · Poem · Modern / American · Modernist

A New Jersey mill town lies on its right side as a sleeping giant with the Passaic falling over rock at its ear, and the verse gathers what goes over with it: a daredevil's last jump, a minister's wife who fell in 1812, wages, a park full of Sunday picnickers. Local histories, newspaper prose and letters from other writers are set straight into the verse. Five books over twelve years, on the principle that there are no ideas but in things.
