Pictures from Brueghel and Other Poems
Ten pieces walk through Brueghel's canvases — a ploughman going on ploughing while a pair of legs disappears into the sea, hunters coming down a hill into a frozen valley, a peasant wedding with the bagpiper's cheeks blown out. Bound with them is a long asphodel poem addressed to a wife of forty years, offering a flower in place of an argument. Written after a stroke had taken most of his speech, and given the Pulitzer two months after he died.
