The Hour of the Star

Clarice Lispector · 1977 CE · Novel · Latin American · Contemporary

Rodrigo S.M., a narrator who announces that he will have to write badly to be fair to his subject, sets down the life of Macabéa, a nineteen-year-old typist up from Alagoas who shares a rented room in Rio with four girls all called Maria, eats hot dogs, and listens to Radio Clock for the time signal and the useless facts between it. He breaks off constantly to justify what he is doing to her, until a boyfriend from the same drought country and a fortune-teller out in Olaria are brought in to move things along. Lispector's last book, finished as she was dying, and the one that carried her from Brazilian modernism into permanent world standing.
