The Passion According to G.H.
A sculptor known only by her initials goes into the maid's room of her comfortable Rio apartment the morning after the woman has left, expecting squalor and finding it swept bare but for a charcoal drawing of a man, a woman and a dog. A cockroach comes out of the wardrobe; she shuts the door on it, then sits down to look at what she has done. Her account of the hours that follow is the work most often named as her central one.
