Cathay

Ezra Pound · 1915 CE · Poem · Modern / American · Modernist

A river-merchant's wife, married at fourteen and alone since her husband went upriver five months ago, writes that the moss by the gate is too deep to sweep and offers to walk out as far as Cho-fu-Sa to meet him. Around her stand bowmen eating fern-shoots on the frontier and an exile remembering a parting. Pound worked from Ernest Fenollosa's notebooks with no Chinese of his own, mostly on Li Bai.
