Gaudete

Ted Hughes · 1977 CE · Poem · English · Contemporary

Spirits carry an English parson out of the world and leave in his place a changeling cut from an oak log and filled with elemental life, which sets about the ministry of love as a log would, assembling the women of the village into a congregation for the son it means to father. The narrative runs at speed through the last day of the arrangement. Set against it is an epilogue of short unattributed lyrics addressed to a nameless goddess.
