Desolation
A childless woman writes cradle songs, a schoolteacher writes prayers that argue with God as an equal, and a Patagonian coast supplies fog that lasts a hundred days and a dead man who will not answer. Sorrow, catechism, rounds for the classroom and prose sketches of Chilean landscape are bound together without apology for the mixture. Assembled and published in New York by Federico de Onís and the Instituto de las Españas while the poet was working in Mexico, and she never fully accepted the book they made of her papers.
