A Life

Guy de Maupassant · 1883 CE · Novel · French · Victorian

A baron's daughter comes out of convent school at seventeen into a chalk-cliff house in Normandy her father has made over to her, and marries a neighbouring viscount within months of meeting him. He proves careful with money, quick with the maid, and untroubled by either, and her world closes down to the house, her ageing parents and a son. Maupassant's first novel; Tolstoy rated it the best French novel since Les Misérables.
