Mademoiselle Fifi
Five Prussian officers billeted in a looted Normandy château pass a wet week smashing the owners' porcelain and shooting the heads off the garden statues for want of anything else to do. The youngest, nicknamed for a phrase he uses about everything, proposes sending to Rouen for women, and the carriage comes back with five of them. Written two years after Boule de Suif and working the same occupation from the occupiers' end of the table.
