The Piece of String

Guy de Maupassant · 1883 CE · Short Story · French · Victorian

A thrifty Norman farmer walking into the Goderville market stoops for a bit of string lying in the road, and sees that the harness-maker he has been at law with for years has watched him do it. That afternoon the town crier announces that a wallet has been lost on the same stretch of road, and the mayor sends for him. Maupassant grew up among these people and wrote several dozen stories in their idiom.
