The Ways of White Folks

Langston Hughes · 1934 CE · Short Story · Modern / American · Modernist

Fourteen stories about what happens when white patronage meets Black life: a Park Avenue woman who collects a young Black musician, a mining-town boy sent to a Southern college on a scholarship with strings attached, a Georgia planter and the son he will not name. The manner is flat and the irony is left entirely to the reader, and nobody in them is improved by the contact. Written straight after Hughes broke with his own patron, and the book that ended his standing as the Renaissance's safe poet.
