In 1828 Manon Gaudet, the unhappy wife of a Louisiana sugar planter, narrates her resentment of a husband who has taken advantage of Sarah, the young enslaved woman she was given as a bride. Her cold, unreliable voice shows how slavery corrupts the mistress as well as the master. Winner of the Orange Prize, it unsettles the usual sympathies of the plantation novel.
