Not Without Laughter

Langston Hughes · 1930 CE · Novel · Modern / American · Modernist

In Stanton, Kansas, a boy called Sandy grows up in his grandmother Aunt Hager's house, between a mother who takes in washing, an aunt who has married into the town's respectable colored society, and another aunt gone off to Kansas City for the music. His father is a guitar player who comes and goes and takes the boy to the colored dance hall when he is home. Hughes's first novel, written on a white patron's stipend, and the Harlem Renaissance's fullest account of Black life away from Harlem.
