Balyakalasakhi

Vaikom Muhammad Basheer · 1944 CE · Novel · Indian · Modernist

Majeed and Suhra grow up next door to each other in a Muslim village in Kerala, argue their way to school over sums, and understand long before anyone tells them that the two households will never let them marry. His father's money goes, he leaves to labour abroad and send back what he can, and she is given to a husband who has no use for her. Basheer wrote it out of his own years of prison, vagrancy and odd jobs, and a Malayalam critic's verdict — a page torn from life, its edges still dripping blood — has stayed attached to it.
