The Officer at Shihao

Du Fu · c. 759 CE · Poem · Chinese · Medieval

A traveller lodging at Shihao village hears a recruiting officer at the gate after dark; the old man of the house goes over the back wall and his wife comes out to answer. Three sons were sent to the siege at Yecheng, she says, one has written that two are dead, and there is nobody left but a grandson at the breast and his mother, who owns no whole skirt to come out in. Second of the Three Officers, and the poem by which Du Fu's plain reporting of the An Lushan years is taught.
