Life and Fate
The Shaposhnikov family is scattered across the Soviet Union in the winter of 1942: a physicist in evacuation whose best work arrives at the worst possible political moment, a son-in-law holding a wrecked house in Stalingrad, a mother writing her last letter out of a Ukrainian ghetto. A German camp, a Soviet camp, a tank corps, a power station and the Lubyanka are held inside one frame and judged by the same standard. The manuscript was seized by the KGB in 1961 and Grossman was told it could not be printed for two centuries; a copy reached the West sixteen years after his death.
