Elemental Odes
A tomato invades the kitchen at midday, is halved without mercy and gives itself to the salad; an onion turns out to be a globe of water, and a pair of hand-knitted socks are two cases of wool the feet are barely worthy of. The lines run two or three words wide down the page so a reader with little schooling can take them at a run. First published as a weekly newspaper column in Caracas, and Neruda's turn toward what he called an impure poetry.
