The Eyes of the Interred

Miguel Ángel Asturias · 1960 CE · Novel · Latin American · Contemporary

A general strike is assembled in secret against the dictatorship and the fruit company, its organisers moving between the capital's cafés and the plantation huts while the police work outward through informers. A schoolteacher and a labour man carry most of it, and the buried are said to lie with their eyes open until the day justice is done. Longest and last of the Banana Trilogy, written as Guatemala's reformist decade was undone.
