Marcovaldo

Italo Calvino · 1963 CE · Short Story · Italian · Contemporary

An unskilled labourer at Sbav & Co. in a grey northern industrial city has a wife, too many children, and an eye that catches only what the city has no use for — a crop of mushrooms by the tram stop, a woodcock in the traffic, snow deep enough to bury the pavement. Twenty stories run the seasons round five times as each of Marcovaldo's discoveries becomes a small municipal disaster. Written for children and adults at once, and the most tender of Calvino's postwar city books.
