The City and the Mountains
Jacinto lives above the Champs-Élysées among thirty thousand books, telephones, a theatrophone and every machine Paris can supply, and has grown so bored that food has lost its taste. His friend Zé Fernandes talks him into visiting the Douro estate he has never seen, where the roof leaks and the luggage goes astray. Expanded from a story published in 1892 and issued after his death, it is Eça's last word on the civilization he spent his life mocking from inside.
