The Relic

Eça de Queirós · 1887 CE · Novel · Portuguese · Victorian

Teodorico Raposo keeps his place in a rich and bigoted aunt's will by kneeling when she kneels and weeping over the correct saints, and she rewards him with a pilgrimage to the Holy Land to bring back a sacred object. In Alexandria he acquires an English companion instead, and in Jerusalem he dreams himself into the crowd at the Passion. Eça's funniest performance, and the one where his anticlericalism turns from indictment into outright farce.
