Cousin Bazilio
Left alone in a comfortable Lisbon flat while her engineer husband inspects a mine in the Alentejo, Luísa is visited by the cousin she nearly married, back from Brazil with money and manners. Her maid Juliana, worn out by service and bad health, finds the letters and understands at once exactly what they are worth. Contemporaries said Eça had rewritten Flaubert; he denied it flatly in a preface, and the resemblance has been the reader's to judge ever since.
