The Crime of Father Amaro

Eça de Queirós · 1875 CE · Novel · Portuguese · Victorian

Ordained without a vocation and posted to the provincial town of Leiria, a young priest lodges with a devout widow whose daughter is the prettiest of the parish's circle of pious women. Confession, novenas and the reading of saints' lives supply him with cover, and the town supplies the gossip. The first sustained realist work written in Portuguese, revised twice across fifteen years against the standing charge that Eça had merely copied Zola.
